results of the Final of the Summerland Bowls Pairs played late today (Sunday) at Ballina.
The event was won by Joey Mills and Brent Cheyne, both of Queensland, by 22 shots to 14. They beat Dale Jones (Qld) and Brendon Egan (NSW)
Mills and Cheyne were unbeatable early and built up a 16 to nil lead after 9 ends. Jones and Egan fought back in the latter stages but could not match the unrelenting Mills and Cheyne.
Brent Cheyne is one of Australia’s rising stars. Only 19 years old, he is the current NSW Singles Champion and a Member of the Australian Under 25 team.

Brett Wilkie of Helensvale won the Summerland Singles Bowls title at Ballina on Sunday afternoon in one of the closest matches ever seen in this event. He defeated Musgrave Hill bowler, Shannon Gittoes 31 shots to 29. Wilkie looked confident and strong early in the match and led by several shots after 8 ends. But Gittoes pegged him back and they reached 14 all. They then traded shot for shot for the rest of the game in a memorable display of quality bowls. Because it was so close, the match took over 31/2 hours to complete.
There were Quarter Final and Semi Final rounds in the lead up to the Final.
In the Quarter Finals, Shannon Gittoes (Musgrave Hill) and Joey Mills (Redland Bay) had little trouble in disposing of their respective opposition Kris Lehfeldt (Pottsville) and Steve Piggott (McKenzie Park). But the other Quarter Finals winners, Brett Wilkie (Helensvale) and Ken Evans (Musgrave Hill) both scraped through to the Semi Final with the narrowest of margins in their matches.
Wilkie lived up to his nickname of “Whizza” in defeating Joel Bourke of Kempsey Heights. Bourke was leading 24/21 at the 26th end and looked on track for an upset win. But Wilkie then won the next 3 ends to clinch the match 25 shots to 24.
It was even tighter in the Ken Evans/Brian Baldwin match. The lead changed 4 times and Baldwin at one stage had an 8 shot lead. Baldwin was leading 23 shots to 19 after 25 ends, but lost the next 4 ends to go down 25/23.
The Semi Finals were something of a boilover with Gittoes easily defeating Mills 25/5 and Wilkie too strong for Evans 25/13.
